Open Minds, Open Doors was a novel campaign designed to persuade landlords and brokers to shift their behavior so they become more open to renting to individuals with histories of justice involvement. Through this initiative, Policy Ground, in partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice under the leadership of Yolanda Johnson-Peterkin, put together a series of “network and learn” events for landlords and brokers in NYC to learn about opportunities to renting to individuals with justice involvement, and to debunk myths and challenge “ossified beliefs.” The events synthesized a unique approach to change, combining compelling narrative storytelling and ethnographic techniques, information-based segments using innovative research on the justice-involved population, and behavioral science approaches shift behavior. As a result, brokers and landlords opened their doors to voucher holders with justice history. The initiative was funded by Enterprise Community Partners through its – Robin Hood Foundation and Trinity Church Wall Street Philanthropies. Visit the Open Minds, Open Doors website.
